Jays dump Ryan

7/8/2009

Well, this didn't end well:

Ryan The Toronto Blue Jays gave reliever B.J. Ryan his unconditional release and activated left-hander Scott Downs from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.
    --snip--

General manager J.P. Ricciardi said he cut Ryan because the team simply didn't believe he would become effective again. "No, we didn't," Ricciardi said Wednesday. "He was not going to be our closer, we didn't foresee him being our closer next year. It's our job to make professional evaluations and from the player we evaluated to sign to the player we have now, it's two totally different guys, and we just don't think he's going to be the pitcher he was when we signed him."

I'm not sure what to do here. Should I:
1. Applaud Ricciardi for accepting that Ryan's contract is a sunk cost, and eating the $15 million left on it?

or should I instead:

2. Castigate Ricciardi for giving Ryan that ridiculous contract in the first place? Particularly considering the ridiculous contracts he gave to Vernon Wells and Alex Rios? Contracts that may hamstring the franchise for some years to come?

I don't know. But today, all Ricciardi can do is what he can do. And today he did the right thing.
