Today's links are wondering if Cliff Lee just needs a little time off. Say, about a month ...
  • Tomorrow in San Francisco, Sportvision and MLB.com are hosting the third annual PITCHf/x Summit, and I'll be there, and you can follow the exciting action on my Twitter feed (or you can really follow the action on the live webcast).
  • Everybody who thinks the Pirates should have spent more money in recent years should at least read Phil Birnbaum's take. I'm not saying they are wrong, but I do think you have to start with the numbers before getting to the moralizing or whatever.
  • We bid fond adieu to the man with the most interesting (full) name in major league history (yes, even more interesting than Russell Martin).
  • Proving -- via Praiseball Bospectus, making its first appearance on this page -- that (as one wag correctly notes) nerd fights are always entertaining.
  • Speaking of nerds -- and I use that term as a proud, card-carrying member of the Internatiional Brotherhood of Nerds -- here are two great chances to get your nerd on, big time ... You can help Retrosheet expand the best thing that ever happened to baseball research, and you can contribute to TangoTiger's Eighth Annual Fans' Scouting Report.
  • Lately, it's become quite clear that entire Barry Halper Collection should be checked, item by item, for authenticity. I mean, assuming that one cares about such things.
  • From Hitting the Cutoff Man, a treatise on minor-league team names (and yes, another project I meant to complete a long time ago but never started).
  • I never really bought into the Sammy Sosa story, but at least Dan McGrath admits that the Chicago writers were complicit in making up that story.
  • Weird Trivia of the Week: one of the leading candidates to play Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: TNG was Reginald Martinez Jackson. (Meanwhile, LeVar Burton once played Ron LeFlore in a TV movie. Everything's a big circle ...)
