Today's links were polished off while listening to Elvis Costello and Sting harmonizing ...

• In the Times last weekend, Michael S. Schmidt put a human face on baseball and steroids. Read that and try to keep hating. I dare you.

• Dave Cameron on the game's young ground-ball pitchers.

• Also from the prolific Cameron (though in a different place): smoke and mirrors and Padre pitchers.

• We lose a great sports columnist, and someone gains an editor. Seems like a lousy trade to me.

• In the wake of Chris Carpenter's latest boo-boo, IIATMS argues that it's finally time to bring the DH to the NL. I don't think that's a terrible idea -- I don't care if I ever see another pitcher hit -- but I still say the game's just a little more interesting if there's a difference between the leagues. So, no.

• From Josh, another little masterpiece.

• You thought sabermetrics was a fairly recent invention? Hardly.

• Paul Lukas struggles -- as I often do -- with the prospect of using a corporate name when we're just trying to have some good clean fun. The solution? Same as usual: a cool t-shirt.
