The fact that the Bucs have a losing record and David isn’t known outside of Tampa Bay eliminates almost any chance of him getting recognized for such a prestigious award. But I don’t think Prisco’s point is that far off.
David is playing as well or better than any defensive player in the league. He has six sacks and five interceptions, making him only the seventh player in NFL history to have at least five sacks and five interceptions in the same season.
A lot of people compared David to Tampa Bay legend Derrick Brooks when he was coming out in the draft last season. I thought that was premature because Brooks is a first-ballot Hall of Famer in my eyes.
But David is starting to remind me a lot of Brooks. At the very least, David should make the Pro Bowl this season. Down the road, if the Bucs become a good team, he might have a shot at Defensive Player of the Year.
