TAMPA, Fla. – On Thursday, we discussed the possible candidacy of Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David for Defensive Player of the Year.

On Friday, David got a big show of support.

“Show me someone that’s been more productive than him all around,’’ coach Greg Schiano said. “He’s a guy that does it all. To me, he’s my Defensive Player of the Year, if I get a vote. I don’t think I do. I’ll stump for him right now.’’

It probably will take a lot more than Schiano campaigning for David to win the honor, which is voted upon by the media. There’s no question David is having an outstanding year. He has six sacks and five interceptions, which makes him only the seventh player in NFL history to have at least five sacks and five interceptions in the same season.

Voters generally favor players on teams with winning records. There also is the fact that David isn’t that well known outside of Tampa Bay. But, if Schiano and the Bucs keep talking about David, the voters might start to listen.
