TAMPA, Fla. -- The news that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had elected captains Thursday and Josh Freeman wasn’t one of them led to some obvious questions from readers.

Do the other players not view the quarterback as a leader?

Coach Greg Schiano said the fact guard Davin Joseph and receiver Vincent Jackson were voted as the offensive captains doesn’t represent shortcomings by Freeman.

“I know one thing, Josh is going to lead. Josh is a leader, so I’m not concerned about that,’’ Schiano said. “If you look at the last two years, Davin didn’t play last year so when we voted Davin was out for the year. And the year before, Vincent wasn’t on the team. So those two guys are strong leaders. It just so happens Josh is on a team with other strong leaders. But I wouldn’t read into that that Josh isn’t a leader. I’ll tell you, to a man, I think every offensive player will tell you, 'We follow No. 5'."

Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and safety Dashon Goldson were voted defensive captains and Adam Hayward was selected to represent the special teams.
