TAMPA, Fla. – Time for a dip into the mailbag.
Seal in Rhode Island asks if I can envision the Bucs taking a wide receiver in the first or second round of this year’s draft.
Pat Yasinskas: Probably not. I think the needs are greater in other areas, like defensive end and offensive line. That said, I do think the Bucs need a speed receiver to go with Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams. They might be able to find someone in the middle rounds or they might be able to get one in free agency. A speed receiver could bring a whole new dimension to Tampa Bay’s offense.
Todd in Charlotte, N.C. asks how linebacker Lavonte David was left off the Pro Bowl roster.
PY: There are a lot of things I don’t like about the Pro Bowl and the fact that David was left off the roster tops the list. The guy is one of the best linebackers in the league and he deserved a trip to Hawaii. I’m not saying it’s right and I’m not saying it’s fair, but I think the things that worked against David were that he’s not a household name and the Bucs didn’t have a very good season. But so many people in the media wrote about David’s snub that I think he’ll be on the radar more going forward.
Esben in Denmark asks about the possibility of the Bucs trading up in the draft to get South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
PY: Esben’s question included the hypothetical that the Bucs think Mike Glennon is their quarterback. In that scenario, I could see the Bucs trading up to get Clowney. Coach Lovie Smith is a defensive guy and the one thing this defense is lacking is an edge pass rusher. The rest of the defense already is good. Add Clowney to it and it could be great.
