Bucs to go slowly with speedster Demps

TAMPA, Fla. – Track and field star Jeff Demps will join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week and he’ll come with one distinction.

“He’ll walk into the National Football League probably as the fastest player in this league,’’ coach Greg Schiano said. “That’s always nice to have on your team.’’

But the Bucs are going to play it slow with their speedster, who spent the summer running in track events. Demps played running back at the University of Florida.

The Bucs want to take a look at Demps as a running back, receiver and a return man. The team will get a two-week roster exemption in which Demps can practice with the team. After that, the Bucs will have to decide if they want to keep Demps around.

“There is no immediate plan,’’ Schiano said. “The guy has not played football in a while. We’ll try to get him back into playing football, get him educated to Buccaneer ways and then as we roll into it, if there’s promise there, then we’ll move forward. If he’s feeling good, we’ll keep moving forward. It’s a two-way street.’’
