Time for a plunge into the mailbag.
Scott in Clearwater, Fla., wants to know if the Buccaneers should try to trade up in the draft to get South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
That sounds like a nice idea because Clowney is the best pass-rusher in the draft and the Bucs desperately need to improve their pass rush. But a trade up to the No. 1 spot, which is where the Bucs would have to get to in order to make sure they get Clowney, would be very costly.
The best example of a similar trade that I can think of was when the Redskins traded up to get Robert Griffin III. That deal cost the Redskins three first-round picks and a second-round choice. I think a price anywhere close to that would be way too steep for the Buccaneers.
New general manager Jason Licht said he believes in building through the draft and he needs to keep all his picks to make that work.
