TAMPA, Fla. -- It was only one play, but it brought plenty of hope that David Gettis' career might not be over.
In Tuesday’s minicamp practice, the wide receiver showed a burst of speed, blew past cornerback Danny Gorrer and caught a touchdown pass. For just a second, it was like a flashback to 2010, when Gettis seemed to have so much potential as a rookie with the Carolina Panthers.
But Gettis hasn’t caught a regular-season pass since his rookie season. Injuries have derailed his career and he’s trying to catch on with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a round-about way. Gettis is taking part in the Bucs’ three-day minicamp that ends Thursday on a tryout basis.
"Every brief moment I get on the field, I have to show them what I can do and go from there,’’ Gettis said.
Gettis will get one more chance to impress the Bucs when they practice later Thursday afternoon.
