We continue our list of the top 15 Buccaneers with No. 12:
Josh McCown, quarterback
What he did in 2013: Playing for Chicago, McCown stepped in for an injured Jay Cutler and played the best football of his career. He completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 1,829 yards with 13 touchdowns and only one interception.
Why he’s No. 12 in 2014: One of the first moves the Bucs made in free agency was signing McCown. The quarterback has history with coach Lovie Smith from their time together in Chicago. Smith views McCown, who will turn 35 in July, as a late bloomer who is a perfect fit for coordinator Jeff Tedford’s offense. McCown will serve as a bridge to “quarterback of the future’’ Mike Glennon. But I wouldn’t look for McCown to give up the starting role this year. If he can play like he did last season, the Bucs will be very happy.
