Business as usual for Greg Schiano

By Pat Yasinskas

TAMPA, Fla. -- Like it or not, Greg Schiano was still the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday afternoon.

A day after losing to the Carolina Panthers to fall to 0-7, Schiano showed up at his regularly scheduled news conference. That might come as a surprise to those who were hoping Schiano would be fired and an interim coach would be named.

Schiano has endured jeers from fans, a local radio station putting up billboards calling for his ouster and continued speculative reports that he has lost the respect of his players.

"Have I lost the locker room? No," Schiano said. "Are they listening? Yes. Are we getting everything we need out of them? Obviously not, because we’re 0-7."

"We have 61 guys in that locker room that I believe in, and I really strongly feel they believe in me. Does belief get tested when you have an 0-7 record? Absolutely. I’m sure it gets tested both ways. I know these guys are busting their gut to do it."

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, a team captain, said Schiano still has the respect of the team.

"As long as he’s our coach, we’re going to have respect for him, and we’re going to play as hard as we can for him," McCoy said. "It’s as simple as that."
