TAMPA, Fla. -- When he met with the Tampa Bay media for the first time Wednesday, defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier revealed one nugget that’s worth noting.
We found out previously that Larry Marmie will hold the title of senior defensive assistant. There’s no doubt Marmie, who coached new coach Lovie Smith in college at Tulsa, will be a veteran sounding board for all things about the defense. But Frazier said Marmie will have another more specific role.
Marmie will focus on coaching the nickelbacks.
“Larry has a wealth of experience in our league, been a coordinator before,’’ Frazier said. “He’s coached the secondary before, so now he’ll be able to focus on that one position, which in our league, it’s become a starting position. The third corner is on the field a lot.’’
I think that’s an excellent concept. Frazier is right. Nickelback is basically a starting position in the NFL these days. It makes a lot of sense to have an individual coach for the position.
In other news, the Bucs announced Thursday that they have hired Jon Embree as tight ends coach and David Borgonzi as defensive quality control coach.
