Bucs continue scouting overhaul

When filling out his coaching staff and signing free agents, Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith brought in a fair amount of guys he had worked with in the past. Now, it’s time for general manager Jason Licht to do the same thing.

You often see changes in personnel departments soon after the draft and that has happened with the Bucs. A day after hiring Jon Robinson as director of player personnel, the team has announced the addition of Andy Speyer as a national scout.

Robinson was with New England when Licht worked with the Patriots. Speyer was with Philadelphia when Licht worked for the Eagles.

These aren’t cases of cronyism. They’re good, solid moves by Licht. Both Robinson and Speyer worked for organizations that have had a lot of success. Licht knows Robinson and Speyer and that means they should be on the same page and the transition should be smooth.

In a way, this is similar to what Smith did at the start of free agency. He went out and signed veteran quarterback Josh McCown, whom he had history with in Chicago. Like Smith, Licht is bringing in personnel people that know how he operates.
