TAMPA, Fla. -- We still don’t know who will be the general manager for the Buccaneers. But we know who it won’t be.

Atlanta personnel executive Lionel Vital said he’s staying with the Falcons. It’s unclear if Vital pulled out on his own or if he was told he no longer being considered for the job. Vital interviewed at least twice and some early reports said he was the favorite to win the job.

The other candidates known to at least have second interviews are Jason Licht, Marc Ross and Lake Dawson. The new general manager will not have final say over the 53-man roster because that distinction belongs to coach Lovie Smith.

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved very rapidly when they hired coach Lovie Smith. But they’re taking a more methodical approach when it comes to deciding on a general manager.

Several candidates will be brought back for second interviews, according to this report by Roy Cummings.

The Bucs previously received permission to talk to multiple front-office workers from around the league about the position. Those candidates include Lionel Vital (Falcons), Lake Dawson (Titans), Marc Ross (Giants), Tom Gamble (Eagles), and there could be others whose names haven’t been reported. Several reports said that Vital and Dawson will get second interviews.

There’s not a great sense of urgency to get the position filled, but it would be helpful to have a general manager in place by next week’s Senior Bowl.

Bucs seem intent on first-time GM

TAMPA, Fla. -- The common theme emerging from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' search for a general manager is that they’re looking for someone who hasn’t held that title before.

The reported candidates include Lake Dawson, Lionel Vital, Marc Ross, Tom Gamble and Morocco Brown. All five are widely respected in league personnel circles and are viewed as up-and-comers. Those are not bad qualities to have in a general manager.

But the direction in which this search apparently is headed leaves me wondering why the Bucs aren’t even looking at some people who have been general managers before. There are experienced guys out there like Jerry Angelo, Mike Tannenbaum and Tim Ruskell.

None of their names have surfaced in connection with the Tampa Bay opening. That is a little surprising since the Bucs made it a point to get a coach with head-coaching experience in the NFL in Lovie Smith.

That the Bucs hired Smith might be the very reason they are attempting to land a first-time general manager. One of the conditions for Smith accepting the job was that he would get final say on personnel matters. That little detail could make experienced general managers lose interest in the Tampa Bay position.

Maybe that is why the Bucs are looking for a first-time general manager.
TAMPA, Fla. -- Add another name to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' search for a general manager.

The latest candidate is Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel Lake Dawson, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Titans have given permission for Dawson to interview for the general manager jobs in Tampa Bay and Miami.

The Bucs already have interviewed Atlanta personnel executive Lionel Vital. New York Giants vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross also has been given permission to interview with the Bucs and Dolphins.

There also have been multiple reports that the Kansas City Chiefs refused to give personnel executive Chris Ballard permission to interview with the Bucs. That is technically true, but Chiefs officials have said Ballard told the team he didn't want to leave because he didn't want to move his family.
