  • A few years ago, my friend who was then a new NBA fan kept mixing up Jeff Van Gundy's name--calling him "Grundy" again and again. I finally convinced him that there was nobody in the whole NBA called Grundy. Well, that approach has been shot to hell.
  • Billy Thomas is new to the NBA, but already knows how to get through an entire feature article using nothing but sports cliches.
  • David Stern says the NBA is done trying to negotiate with the owners of the Blazers and the Rose Garden. A spokesman for the arena ownership says he thought the talks were ongoing, and seems mystified as to why Stern would say that.
  • Celtics Blog suggests Daryl Morey--the Honcho-to-be in Houston--is the genius behind Boston's signing of Brian Scalabrine. Michael McCann of the Sports Law Blog knows Morey personally, and says he's "a really smart, approachable guy with a lot of common sense."
  • The Reggie Miller tribute night ends badly for the Pacers.
  • Chris Broussard is publishing some of his e-mail in response to his blog post saying Larry Brown wasn't so great. Here's one from Pete in Detroit: "Did you know that Brown's playoff record was sub-.500 before coaching Detroit? I've never understood the accolades, and was furious watching LB never make adjustments: most glaringly in Game 7 of the Finals when Bruce Bowen switched to guard Billups and Brown was like a deer in the headlights, unable to adjust at the most critical juncture of the season. If you go back and actually take an in-depth look at every Pistons playoff series under Brown, you would see that he was badly outcoached by Rick Carlisle and Lawrence Frank as a rookie. Both those guys had major injuries that helped the Pistons get by. It was not because of LB.''
  • So tight they're illegal: looks like the NBA is about to ban tights.
  • Charley Rosen has nice things to say about Kwame Brown: "He may never be an accomplished scorer. But he could certainly turn into the same kind of lithe, aggressive, quick-footed post-defender that Horace Grant was in his prime. And that's not too shabby..."
  • John Canzano's all over the "who gets the armrest" debate.
  • Ian Thomsen's gossip column in the current Sports Illustrated, quoting... someone: "I hear that the Blazers are interested in hiring [Sonics director of basketball operations] Dave Pendergraft in some front-office capacity, maybe to replace G.M. John Nash, so that [coach] Nate McMillan can have his own guy in Portland." (Isn't this the same magazine that just a big article about how unsourced gossip on blogs is ruining sports coverage?)
