Former Hawkeye Star Pierre Pierce Gaining Parole, Eyes NBA

William Petroski and Tom Witosky report of the Des Moines Register report on the impending release of Pierre Pierce:

[Pierce's Attorney Alfredo] Parrish said Pierce still wants to play in the NBA.

"There are a couple of teams that are very interested in him," Parrish said. "The question is how are we going to make those arrangements for travel, etc. That is what I am trying to work out with the county attorney right now."

Parrish declined to specify which NBA teams have expressed interest in his client.

Pierce entered prison after pleading guilty in Dallas County District Court to reduced charges of third-degree burglary, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, false imprisonment and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He will finish a two-year prison sentence on Sunday, including time off for good behavior and participation in prison treatment programs. He still faces four years of probation, Scaletta said.

Pierce has spent most of his prison time at the Mount Pleasant prison, where he has completed a four- to five-month treatment program for sex offenders. He must register with the Iowa Sex Offender Registry before leaving prison, but he will not be restricted as to where he can live in Iowa because his crime did not involve a minor, Scaletta said.

The January 2005 incident was Pierce's second legal mess. In 2002, he received no jail time after pleading guilty of assault causing injury in a sexual assault in Iowa City.

Good background on Pierce from Wikipedia. I'm taking the liberty of speaking for my favorite team, the Trail Blazers, when I say "not it."
