  • Chauncey Billups and Jason Maxiell, partners in a crisis of ear symmetry.
  • Joakim Noah and Corey Brewer party Roman-style, as Erik Brady reports: "We have a little inside joke. When we go out to a party, I say, 'Joakim Noah's here. All hail Caesar!' " "Yeah, Corey always does that," Noah says. "He shouts out, 'MOP! Most Outstanding Player right here!' He knows it makes me mad. I call him 'Brutus.' " The same article also says Noah had to be talked out of refusing to visit President Bush with his team.
  • David Stern says that if Nevada legalizes marijuana next month, the All-Star game will be the bomb continue as planned in February.
  • Rick Telander's first post as a basketball blogger was great. His second one? Outsourced.
  • Money! The Painted Area has your over/under recommendations. This one I could not agree with more: "ORL 38.5 (36) - OVER - Strong There's really no way I *can't* pick these guys to improve by 3 or more games, after they finished last season like gangbusters following shrewd trades and developing young players. These guys not only finished the season 12-3, but beat DAL, DET, MIA, and SAS in doing so, the latter two on the road." Dwight Howard is arriving with a roar. Jameer Nelson is real. Grant Hill might hit some open shots. They're going to win 40 for sure.
  • Free agents piling up on the market. This is why a lot of teams like to have roster spots about how. Brian Grant and Luke Jackson, for instance, are currently available.
  • There are plenty of things worse than a broken hand.

  • Charley Rosen: "Look for Matt Bonner's rebounding, incredible perimeter shooting and generic toughness to be a pleasant surprise. But, how well will Bonner fit into the Spurs' quick-moving, help- defense?"
  • Mark Cuban had a bunch of scientists examine the new and the old ball: "...with a few drops of added moisture on the surface of each type of ball, the new synthetic balls have a coefficient of friction which is at least 30% smaller than similarly moistened leather balls. We have also measured the moisture absorption rate, which confirms that the synthetic ball absorbs moisture at a much slower rate, leaving more of the moisture on the surface. Therefore, when wet, the synthethic balls are much harder to grip and handle (slippery). By contrast, our measurements indicate that the grip of the leather ball improves after similar moistening." Cuban is in favor of keeping the new ball all the same, as it would be too much hassle to change.
  • A scout talks to Randy Hill about the Phoenix Suns: "What makes them dangerous, especially in the regular season, is the lack of time other teams have to prepare for that style of play," the scout said. "Sure, you can game-plan the heck out of it, but there's no way to simulate the pace for your players in maybe one practice. Midway through the first quarter, your team can look shell-shocked. Or you may be piling up points and feeling happy, which may be even worse."
  • If you wanted to road trip around all 30 NBA arenas, this would be invaluable.
