Craig Sager interviewed Mayor Mick Cornett on TNT last night about Oklahoma City's future as an NBA city. There has been talk the Hornets might try to stay permanently instead of heading back home to New Orleans. There has also been talk that the Oklahoma City-based owners of the Seattle Supersonics might be interested in moving their team there:
“We’ve been overwhelmed with our community’s support and I think it has changed Oklahoma City forever. We feel like we’ve convinced the NBA that we deserve a franchise, and we’re at the top of the relocation list and we think we’ll have an NBA franchise long term. We have shown a very high level of support for an NBA franchise similar to Portland, Salt Lake, Sacramento and I think we fit very well with those (NBA) cities. (The support) is not a novelty--our corporate support is #1 in the league, our fan support is #7 in the league. This city is very much a sports town, we’ve been a college market in the past with Oklahoma University and Oklahoma State playing at the Big 12 level, but this is one thing that everyone can come and be a part of. (An NBA team) is the most inclusive thing that Oklahoma City has had to offer. ”
