- Everybody gets a turn being Wayne Newton. Great video.
- Jonathan Givony explains that Sixers/Jazz trade: Barring some sort of catastrophe that sees the Jazz lose the rest of their games and the Knicks win the rest of theirs...Utah will get New York's 2007 2nd rounder this year or next (and not Philly's, because they traded their 07 2nd rounder away already last year in return for Bobby Jones) as a part of this trade. In return, Philly gets under the luxury tax, which will likely save them a couple of million dollars. We don't know the exact figures of the BRI yet (and therefore the savings), but we do know already what figure teams need to get under to AVOID paying the tax, AND get the income that is distributed amongst non-luxury tax teams. Last year that figure was 2.38 million dollars. The Jazz had an extra roster spot and room to spare under the luxury tax, which helped facilitate this trade. The Sixers sent cash over to cover the rest of Henderson's salary. So essentially, the Jazz move up 19 spots (according to our current projections) for "free", and the Sixers move down 19 spots and likely save themselves a few million dollars. Just another fantastic example of how the luxury tax is doing exactly what it was intended to, which is create a “hard cap” that teams will do almost anything to get under. We’ve seen numerous trades this year that reflect that.
- Tim Kawakami looks at the Golden State Warriors' road record. He looks at recent history. He does some math. He decides, these Warriors will be in the lottery: "6-20 is a bright, historical sign that you’re not going to the playoffs. How bright and historical? 96 teams have qualified for the NBA playoffs in the last six seasons, from 2000-01 to last year. The worst road record of the bunch: 13-28 by Miami in 2003-04 on its way to 42-40."
- Brian Windhorst says the Cavaliers really tried to get Mike Bibby: "I am told by sources that general manager Danny Ferry and his staff worked like crazy for days trying to get something done. They had three and four-team packages lined up, huge chucks of players moving here and there in an effort to get Sacramento to bite and deliver Mike Bibby. It just didn't work."
- Sam Rubenstein: "With 0.7 left, Brad Miller threw a beautiful pass to John Salmons, who drained the miracle three to tie the game and we’re going to overtime… no wait… it was a two… no wait it was a three, but it was after the buzzer. The refs reviewed it, the Wizards won the game. The Kings are the Nets of the west. They have the painful loss down to a science."
- Interesting thought about Rod Thorn's mindset: does he really believe, especially with Dwyane Wade hurt, that the Nets can't win the East? When that team's healthy, they have the Pistons and six other mediocre teams to worry about in the playoffs. It wasn't time to blow up the team. Dave Feschuk makes that point in an article that also includes a great Cotton Fitzsimmons quote about the trade deadline: "The only people that get rich are the phone companies."
- Jack McCallum remembers Dennis Johnson: "On a cold winter morning in 1986, Dennis Johnson and his Boston Celtics teammates stood outside of Market Square Arena, unable to get inside for a shootaround before their game that night against the Indiana Pacers. Johnson bundled his coat around him and pulled down his ski cap over his ears. 'Well, they locked us out,' said Johnson, 'so we'll just have to bust these mother----ers even worse than normal.' He said it matter-of-factly and somewhat ruefully, as a statement of fact, and, of course, that's exactly what Boston did."
- Ira Winderman says not to be surprised if Eddie Jones replaces Gary Payton in the starting lineup.
- Stephen Jackson, point guard?
