Of all the places in the world I would love to visit, Turkey is at the top of the list. I love everything I have heard about the place, and everyone I know who has been goes on and on about how great it is.
Please don't think I intend to slight Turkey in any way.
But is there any chance the Timberwolves will have training camp there again?
Craig Smith has a journal on the team's official website, and he explains how you get to the practice facility they are using in Turkey from Minnesota:
- 7.5 hour flight to Britain.
- 3.5 hour flight to Turkey.
- 1.5 hour bus ride to the hotel.
- Then, and this is the part of that kills me, according to Smith it's still an hour (in traffic) to the practice facility, and when you get there, it's hotter than Hades!
If you're trying to do two-a-days, being an hour each way from your hotel is a major pain. Being 15 minutes away is even a pain. This is really one of those occasions when, ideally, you amble a couple hundred yards from the showers in the gym to the bed in your hotel room.
And for Smith, who has an ankle injury, the irony is that when he gets all the way there, all he's doing is riding a bike, something people all over Minnesota can do in their driveway.
All that travel has clearly given Smith a touch of the crazy. He's babbling about the "Princess Diaries," and, without explanation, calling himself "the Rhino." Here he writes about their hotel:
Man, is it nice! Something you see off one of those Cinderella/Princess Diaries movies (not like I have watched them or anything). ... We finished practice, came back to the hotel, and I decided to take a swim. The pool is open 24 hours and it's right next to the bay water (which you shouldn't try alone because it can be a little scary). Since I am the Rhino, I took a swim and that put me straight to sleep.
Solid work, Rhino. Keep it up.
