Here's one feature: Being empowered to come up with creative ideas and then implement them.

D-League president Dan Reed has been the president of the D-League since 2007. Over that five-year tenure, he has overseen an enterprise that has grown in scope and mission. Eleven NBA teams are now singly affiliated with a D-League franchise, and a quarter of all rostered NBA players have spent some time in the D-League.

All the while, the D-League has become a laboratory of innovation, a place where smart folks can experiment with interesting ideas about how to improve basketball, whether it's rewriting the offensive goal-tending rule or speeding up the game.

Reed sat down with us last week during NBA summer league.
