Easily my favorite thing that was on TrueHoop yesterday was a link the Go Go's singing "We Got the Beat."
If you are a fan of UConn center Hasheem Thabeet, who is likely to be very high draft pick next Thursday, then it's impossible to hear that song without assuming they are in fact saying "We Got Thabeet." Honestly, if you were to re-record the song in honor of the big man, it sound exactly like the original. They did a perfect job.
But that's only the beginning.
TrueHoop reader Matt points out that Eric B. and Rakim have done their own unwitting tribute to the 7-3 Tanzanian shotblocker. Another perfect match. It sounds just like they're saying "Thabeet."
Unimpeachably excellent.
Two song tributes to Thabeet basically materialized out of nowhere. There must be more, right?
There sure are.
Without all that much searching I dug all these up:
- Here's Madonna singing "On and on, on Thabeet goes."
- 50 Cent wants Thabeet to drop in right now. (PG-13)
- Here's an obscure Stones recording of that Bill Withers song with the line "Give me Thabeet boy, to free my soul, I want to get lost in rock and roll."
- The musical Hairspray culminates in a song that says "You can't stop Thabeet."
- Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" includes these lyrics: ""Are you ready hey, are you ready for this? Are you hanging on the edge of your seat? Out of the doorway the bullets rip, To the sound of Thabeet, yeah."
- Christian rockers the Newsboys have a line that seems to simultaneously question the Grizzlies' advanced statistics and their religiosity: "Your in-depth research shows: Drop the God, emphasize Thabeet."
- 2 Unlimited has some dubious advice: "Let Thabeet control your body."
- Sonny and Cher: "Thabeet Goes On."
- Don't forget DeBarge's famous "To Thabeet of the Rhythm of the Night."
- UPDATE: A Knick fan's wish: "Beastie Boys known to let Thabeet ... drop."
- UDPATE: "Can't stop, can't stop Thabeet," says Junior Senior. (Thanks Ben Q. Rock.)
