- Pini Gershon, the Maccabi Tel Aviv coach who will be prowling the sidelines tonight as his team faces the Clippers tonight in L.A., is certainly a loud mouth. He was once quoted calling a co-owner of his own team someone with "mental disabilities." I went to YouTube, looking for video of his marvelously outlandish refusal to leave the Madison Square Garden court on Sunday. What I found instead was a 2000 speech Gershon gave to Israeli Defense Forces, in which he goes about the ridiculous task of explaining how different people's skin color offers insight into things like how smart or coachable they are. Gershon has said he is not a racist.
- Matt McHale of Bulls By the Horns: "Okay, I’m officially worried about Luol Deng. Scratch that. I was worried a game or two ago. I’m very worried about Deng. His shooting continued to be ice cold (2-for-7). Most of his shot attempts were long jumpers and he made only one trip to the line. He did play a preseason-high 32 minutes and grabbed eight rebounds (all defensive). But he was -- and has been -- a ghost on offense. Remember: Deng is supposed to be the primary member of the committee assigned to cover the loss of Ben Gordon’s 20 PPG."
- Royce Young of Daily Thunder: "I thought Kevin Durant was very much improved on defense. He was really working to stay in front of his guy."
- The Celtics have an improved bench, but don't think of it as a "second unit," because hardly any teams play five bench players together.
- Blog hero Rod Benson gets cut by the Pacers.
- And people think Flip Saunders isn't big into defense.
- There has been some suggestion that Wizard players were happy to see Eddie Jordan go, but that thesis is complicated by reports of one Wizard vacationing with the former coach, and a certain baby shower connection.
- The Blazers signed Australian draft-pick Patty Mills, which, in the bizarro world of NBA contracts, could be a prelude to cutting him.
