Fred Davis hopeful for Sunday

By John Keim

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis said he's optimistic about playing against the Oakland Raiders Sunday after suffering what he termed a mid- to high-ankle sprain.

Davis admitted his ankle was still tender.

"It feels way better," said Davis in the locker room before practice. “I can run. We’ll see how the week goes, pushing off and getting back into running full-speed routes.”

Davis sprained his right ankle on the final play of practice Friday. He warmed up before Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions, but knew he would not be able to play.

Davis saw his playing time drop in the second half of the Week 2 loss at the Green Bay Packers, thanks to the emergence of rookie Jordan Reed. But Reed has a quad contusion and his status for Sunday is uncertain.

"It sucks, but at least it’s something I can deal with and push through," Davis said.

Davis missed much of last season after rupturing his left Achilles' tendon.
