With Saturday's signings, the Celtics are headed back over the salary cap. Access to the $5.6 million mid-level could allow the team to either inflate the contract of second-round picks like Demertius Jackson or target in-season help.

The Boston Celtics made a flurry of moves Saturday, including agreeing to deals with Gerald Green and Tyler Zeller. What it seems to suggest is that Boston is willing to head into next season with the roster it has constructed. The Celtics still have the flexibility and assets to explore trade opportunities, but also bolstered their depth assuming no deals materialize.

Mookie Betts joins select company

For the second time this season, Betts hit leadoff home runs in back-to-back games against the Twins on Thursday and Friday. Only three other players in the modern era (since 1900) have hit leadoff homers in back-to-back games multiple times within a single season, the Elias Sports Bureau reports.

  • Craig Biggio in 2001

David Ortiz proves he's human

Ortiz grounded into a 4-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth inning on Friday. It's the second time this season he's grounded into a double play in a walk-off situation. He did that only three times in his career before this year, ESPN Stats & Info notes.

Mookie Betts felt what manager John Farrell described as "soreness" in his knee to the point where he "felt like he couldn't run as normal." Farrell called it "precautionary" to take Betts out of the game. Red Sox hoping it's not a lingering issue.

Red Sox OF Betts (knee) exits, is day-to-day

Outfielder Mookie Betts is day-to-day after leaving the Red Sox's loss Friday night with soreness in his right knee, an issue that has been a periodic problem for him since the All-Star break.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

Mookie Betts has left Friday night's game with right knee soreness, according to the Red Sox. His status has been classified as "day to day." More, obviously, after the game. Betts hit a leadoff homer for the second consecutive game and grounded out to third base in his second at-bat.

Asked last night if he's afraid Mookie Betts might catch him for the Red Sox's home run lead, David Ortiz said, "Man, I'm scared." Betts now has 20; Ortiz has 24.

All-time #MLBRank: No. 1 Babe Ruth

The Great Bambino is MLB's all-time leader in slugging percentage (.690) and OPS (1.163). His 714 home runs rank third all time. But that's not the only stat in which he ranks third. Ruth's career ERA of 2.28 ranks third among starters since earned runs were officially kept in both leagues in 1913 (minimum 1,000 IP). Nos. 10-1
