David Backes on signing with the Boston Bruins: "It's a blue-collar, don't take crap from anybody type of team. That's how I've built my game in 10 years in the league. . . Seemed like an awesome fit hockey-wise . . . A match made in heaven."

Evan Turner's monster payday with the Portland Trail Blazers — he'll earn more than $14 million over his final salary in Boston — is another selling point for the Celtics to use when trying to lure non-elite free agents. Two years ago, few teams would even roll the dice on Turner. Look what two seasons with Brad Stevens did for Turner's career.

Free-agency winners and losers ... so far

Milan Lucic will plug a big hole in Edmonton, Kyle Okposo could be a playoff key for Buffalo and Chicago's reunion with Brian Campbell might pay off. But the Rangers are losing relevance.

The Boston Bruins agreed to a five-year deal worth $30 million with veteran forward David Backes, according to a league source. The 32-year-old centerman will fit nicely in the Bruins' lineup. Originally selected by St. Louis (62nd overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Backes played his entire career with the Blues and registered 206 goals and 254 assists for 460 points in 727 regular-season games.

A lot of talent being kept off the field

Tom Brady isn't the only notable player who will begin the season as a spectator due to suspension. This group of eight is set to miss 51 combined games for various violations.

Where will UFA forward Milan Lucic land today? We know it's not Vancouver, Los Angeles or Boston. The Bruins never reached out to Lucic. While it appears he will sign with Edmonton, it would be so fun to see him land in Montreal.
