Steven Wright allowed three hits with his fastball (Moreland's two-run single, Beltre's RBI single, Andrus' three-run triple), which matches his season-high. He also gave up three hits on his fastball June 10 at Minnesota. Including tonight, he has thrown 263 fastballs (16.2 percent of his pitches) and allowed 15 hits, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Steven Wright allowed a season-high eight runs, five in the fifth inning. But thanks to errors by Xander Bogaerts and Hanley Ramirez, only three of the runs were earned, leaving his ERA at 2.18, which still leads the American League.

Former knuckleballer Tom Candiotti was one of the first to tell Steven Wright to throw his knuckler when he's ahead or even in counts, his fastball when he's behind. It's a formula that has worked for Wright. There, though, Mitch Moreland pounced on a 2-0 fastball for a two-run single that gave Rangers a 3-1 lead through four innings.

On behalf of the Rangers, Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus present David Ortiz with custom cowboy boots with "Papi 34" and a Red Sox logo and a belt with a big, old buckle that undoubtedly would draw the approval of ex-teammates Josh Beckett and John Lackey.

David Ortiz hit the first homer of his career here in Arlington on Sept. 14, 1997, against Texas reliever Julio Santana. The Rangers will honor Ortiz with a pregame ceremony in a few minutes.

John Farrell alluded Friday to Red Sox facing a decision once Ryan Hanigan returns from DL. While they typically view catcher as a "two-man position," Farrell said, red-hot Sandy Leon is out of options and might not clear waivers. Christian Vazquez is in lineup tonight to catch knuckleballer Steven Wright, but if he doesn't hit more, he might lose playing time -- or even his roster spot, unless the Sox carry three catchers.

Red Sox big rally on the road ends trend

The Red Sox rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to complete an 8–7 comeback victory over the Rangers. According to Elias, Boston, which trailed 6–0 at the end of the third inning, had lost its last 120 road games in which it trailed by six or more runs. The Red Sox' last comeback win of that kind on the road was on June 7, 2003.

More on Jackie Bradley Jr. calling Mookie Betts' shot: "I hate to take a lot of credit," Bradley said, "but I called it. In that situation, it was big. It was a big swing from a big-time player. You have 'The Playmaker' at the plate. It was just something that I was feeling." If the ball hadn't gone over the fence, "I would have probably cried," Betts said.
