In discussing reliever Koji Uehara's strained right pectoral muscle, Dave Dombrowski referenced Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez, who dealt with the unusual injury for a pitcher in 2014. Sanchez missed seven weeks that season.

With one week until the trade deadline, Dave Dombrowski's public stance is that Red Sox are doing a lot of listening -- they're "open-minded," he said -- but don't feel like they need to make any trades.

Mookie Betts had fluid drained from his knee two days ago, leading to diminished swelling and less discomfort when he tested it by running earlier today. But manager John Farrell said the Red Sox "don't fully expect [the fluid] to vanish," a sign that Betts might need a few days off during a brutal August in which team makes two 11-game road trips and has one off-day.

Believe it or not, it's conceivable Craig Kimbrel could rejoin the Red Sox by next week. He will throw off a mound again Wednesday, could go on a minor-league rehab assignment as soon as Saturday, and might not need more than one outing before he's ready, according to manager John Farrell. Kimbrel had minor knee surgery only two weeks ago.
