Bill Belichick commented on the frequency of Patriots' trades the last few seasons and said, "You know, we haven't been afraid to trade here through the years." Belichick theorized that some of the trades are a result of a player being in the last year of their contract, so perhaps the teams trading those players to New England want to get something for them before knowing they will depart in free agency.

Bill Belichick just concluded an afternoon conference call as the Patriots are on the bye week. The two biggest takeaways: 1) He called DL Akiem Hicks, acquired from New Orleans in a trade, a big, physical player who the team felt like did good things in August's joint practice. That extended look at Hicks in practice helped in making the trade; 2) Belichick said the team wasn't looking to trade TE Michael Hoomanawanui, but to get something (Hicks), they had to give something up.

Sox retain Farrell, Lovullo

Lovullo signed a two-year extension as bench coach in which he waived the right to pursue a managing job this offseason. Lovullo's agreement protects the Sox in the event Farrell's health remains an issue. (via Gordon Edes)
