BOSTON -- And then there were two dozen left.
Prior to Saturday night's preseason finale against Columbus at the TD Garden, the Boston Bruins trimmed their roster to 24 players by making some cuts. The team has to be below the 23-man limit by 3 p.m. Wednesday.
There were really no surprises among the cuts, although Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli did mention that defenseman Drew Fata played well in recent games.
Lefebvre was signed to a one-year deal before he was waived. He had been in camp without a contract.
Mikko Lehtonen, Jeff LoVecchio and Adam McQuaid were all assigned to Providence. Also forward Kirk MacDonald, who has a minor league contract, was returned to the P-Bruins, who open their season next Sunday.
News and notes
There was some hope that David Krejci, Marco Sturm and/or Steve Begin would play against the Blue Jackets, but all three were scratched. ... The Bruins announced Saturday that Don Sweeney has been promoted to assistant general manager, a title he'll share with Jim Benning. Sweeney's previous title was director of player development and hockey operations. This is his fourth season in the club's front office.
