Lester had pitched 15 scoreless innings in division series play beforel Torii Hunter crushed a three-run homer in the fifth inning. That snapped Lester's streak, which ranked fifth on the all-time list. Jeff Nelson leads the list with 21 scoreless innings.

But Lester said he felt pleased with his effort.

"It's not the results I wanted," he said. "I'm not happy with that, [but] when I look back I was convicted with every pitch. And that's all you can try to do, is be focused, focus on every pitch and be convicted And whatever happens after that you really can't control."

Lester will not pitch again until Game 4.

Baldelli update
Rocco Baldelli was in the clubhouse while the media had access to it for the first time since he left last Friday's game with a strained hip flexor. Baldelli was left off the roster for this round, and said while he feels better, he still is hampered by the injury.

"If I could get out there and run and swing the bat this point I think I'd be active," he said. "My goal is to be out there, I want to be out there playing."

Baldelli could possibly be activated for the next round, but he still has to be able to do basic exercises and then move on to baseball activities before that possibility is broached.

"Compared to when I came off the injury to now, it's made a lot of progress," he said.

Francona was not out for pregame introductions because he had food poisoning. The day before he had joked that he probably wouldn't get much sleep -- not because of anticipation of his team's first playoff game this year, but because he'd be dealing with the aftereffects of going to Del Taco. Well, on Thursday, the joke became a reality. "It's been a tough day," he said. Then someone asked Francona about having beef when he argued a call with first base umpire CB Bucknor. "Don't bring up the word beef, please," he quipped ... Speaking of Bucknor, there were multiple calls he was involved in on Thursday night, at least two that went against the Red Sox that appeared to be incorrect. The Red Sox players, predictably, stayed away from any criticism of Bucknor or the other umps ... It was the first shutout in Angels' playoff history. Boston was shut out for the first time since Game 2 of the ALDS in 1995, against Cleveland. That snapped a 68-game streak of consecutive playoff games in which the Red Sox scored a run.
