PITTSBURGH -- New England Patriots defensive end Shaun Ellis suffered a rib injury in the first quarter of Sunday's 25-17 loss to the Steelers.

Ellis took himself out of the game after landing awkwardly while pursuing Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. After being checked out by trainers on the sideline, he went to the locker room in the second quarter.

He did not return to the game.
