Dustin Pedroia set for thumb surgery

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will have surgery in the coming weeks to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, an injury he suffered diving into first base on Opening Day.

Pedroia played 160 regular-season games and all 16 playoff games with the injured thumb.

"Yeah, it's nothing new," Pedroia confirmed to ESPNBoston.com on Friday. "I've got to get that thing fixed."
