Dustin Pedroia reinjures thumb

BOSTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia reinjured his right thumb and was removed from Tuesday night's game after his last at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Pedroia was not available to speak with reporters after Boston's 7-5 win over the Miami Marlins, and Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said it's too early for a complete update.

"He was more fearful than he was injured," Valentine said. "He thought it might have been a recurrence. We'll see how he is tomorrow."

In the seventh, Pedroia hit a foul pop on a 95-mph inside fastball, breaking his bat on the swing. After Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez made the catch, Pedroia walked back to the dugout shaking his right hand. He is scheduled to be examined on Wednesday.

"I'm sure we'll take all precautionary measures," Valentine said.

Pedroia has been wearing a guard around his right thumb after he suffered a partially torn adductor muscle and missed six games before returning on June 5. He is batting .170 in 13 games since his return.
