Pedro Beato acquired by Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox will receive right-handed reliever Pedro Beato as the player to be named later in the trade that sent catcher Kelly Shoppach to the New York Mets earlier this week.

He's been optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team moved reliever Scott Atchison to the 60-day disabled list (right elbow strain).

The 25-year-old, Dominican-born Beato has split his season between the Mets and Triple-A Buffalo. In seven appearances at the major league level this season, Beato is 0-0 with a 10.38 ERA in 4 1/3 innings.

His last outing with the Mets was his worst. He surrendered four runs in just 1/3 of an inning on July 23 and was sent to Triple-A the next day. In his past three appearances at the Triple-A level, Beato has surrendered 10 runs in five innings.

He pitched 67 innings for the Mets in 2011, with a 4.30 ERA and a 2-1 record.
