Calf again sidelines Mark Teixeira

An MRI of New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira's strained left calf revealed he irritated the injury attempting to beat out a double-play ball in Saturday night's loss to the Baltimore Orioles and will be out of action another 10-14 days.

Teixeira originally suffered the injury Aug. 28 in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays and missed 10 games before returning to the lineup Saturday night. On his final at-bat of the game, with runners on first and third, one out and the Yankees trailing by a run, Teixeira grounded to second and dived head-first to try to avoid a game-ending double play.

Although television replays show he beat the throw, Teixeira was called out by first base umpire Jerry Meals and the Yankees lost the game, 5-4.

After the game, Teixeira said he aggravated the injury on the play and manager Joe Girardi said Teixeira would not play in the remaining game against the Orioles on Sunday, or in the upcoming three-game series against the Red Sox in Boston.

Teixeira underwent the MRI Monday afternoon at New York Presbyterian Hospital and was examined by team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad. The Yankees have classified the injury as a Grade 1 strain and say Teixeira will be evaluated on a weekly basis for the remainder of the season.

Teixeira is batting .255 with 23 home runs and 81 RBIs in 120 games this season.
