Patriots rule out Aaron Dobson

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Aaron Dobson, who has come on in recent weeks to assume the team's top role at the outside "X" spot, has been ruled out for Sunday's road game against the Houston Texans.

Dobson sustained a foot injury in Sunday's overtime win over the Denver Broncos and didn't practice all week.

Dobson has played in 10 games this season, with seven starts, and has totaled 35 catches for 492 yards and four touchdowns. At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he is the Patriots' tallest receiver and best vertical threat.

In his absence, the Patriots are most likely to turn to rookie Kenbrell Thompkins (31 catches, 450 yards, 4 TDs), who replaced Dobson in the second half on Sunday.

The Patriots also ruled out starting right tackle Marcus Cannon, who was thrust into the top unit after Sebastian Vollmer sustained a season-ending leg injury on Oct. 27. Cannon injured his ankle Sunday against the Broncos, and eight-year veteran Will Svitek is his replacement.

No. 2 tight end Michael Hoomanawanui was also ruled out for the second straight week after sustaining a knee injury Nov. 18 against Carolina.

The Patriots also listed seven players as questionable, a group headlined by starting cornerbacks Aqib Talib (hip) and Alfonzo Dennard (knee), and starting safety Steve Gregory (thumb).
