New England Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib will not travel with the team to New York and will not play in Sunday's matchup with the Jets, a league source confirmed to

The Boston Herald reported earlier that Talib would not travel.

The veteran cornerback, who has emerged as a top playmaker for New England's defense, was listed as doubtful Friday as he continues to deal with a hip injury suffered last week against the New Orleans Saints.

The Patriots are already down their top two defensive players, as nose tackle Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo have both been placed on season-ending injured reserve.

In Talib's absence, the Patriots will likely start second-year player Alfonzo Dennard and Kyle Arrington at cornerback in their base defense, with rookie Logan Ryan as a projected starter at nickelback. Recently appointed defensive captain Devin McCourty provides insurance to move to cornerback if needed.

The 27-year old Talib, acquired in a trade last season, leads the Patriots with four interceptions this season, tied for best in the NFL. He has been used to cover opposing team's top targets on several occasions this season, as was the case against the Saints in Week 6 when he catalyzed an effort to hold Jimmy Graham without a catch.

Also ruled out for Sunday was second-year safety Tavon Wilson. This marks the third straight game that Wilson will miss due to a hamstring injury. The 2012 second-round draft pick mostly contributes on special teams as a member of the "Big 4" units -- kickoff return, kickoff coverage, punt return and punt coverage.

Talib and Wilson join wide receiver Danny Amendola, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly and running back Leon Washington as Patriots to have already been ruled out for Sunday's game.
