8. NHL Lockout Halts Hockey

The Bruins would have opened their season on Oct. 11 vs. the Flyers if it weren't for the second NHL lockout in eight years. The league has been unable to reach a collective bargaining agreement with the NHL Players Association, led by executive director Donald Fehr. Negotiations have moved slowly, with no end in sight, and the league has canceled games through Jan. 14. As 2012 comes to an end, it's believed that the NHL is just one step away from calling off the season.
