Here are Gordon Edes' rankings of the Sox roster from 25-1, in order of importance in October. Thornton says he has been disappointed with the results since his July acquisition. Farrell gives him the benefit of the doubt because of his oblique injury in August. Few teams can feature three lefty options in the pen; an effective Thornton could be a difference-maker. (Note: If there's a surprise addition it could be Jackie Bradley Jr., given Shane Victorino's assorted aches and pains and the small fracture in Jacoby Ellsbury's right foot). -- Gordon Edes
