LONDON -- British heavyweight Audley Harrison has dropped Greg Wedlake as his next opponent after being told Wedlake would only be allowed to fight for 12 minutes. Harrison, who has had a troubled start to his professional career after winning the super-heavyweight gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was due to meet Wedlake at Wembley on April 20. But he is now looking for a new opponent after the British Boxing Board of Control refused to licence Wedlake to fight over six three-minute rounds. Harrison's manager, Colin McMillan, said: "I am saddened by the BBBC's position. To impose a condition that the fight takes place over six two-minute rounds would be a backward step for Audley. "One of the prime reasons for selecting Greg Wedlake was to give an undefeated British boxer the chance to make a name for himself. It now seems very unlikely Audley will face a British opponent. We will confirm his new opponent next week." Wedlake is unbeaten as a pro but has had only one bout in the last four years and the BBBC would only sanction the contest over four three-minute rounds or six rounds of two minutes. |
