Yenifel Vicente in FNF main event

1/7/2014 - Boxing

Junior lightweight Juan Antonio Rodriguez of Mexico will face late substitute Yenifel Vicente in the main event of this week's "Friday Nights Fights" on ESPN2, the network said on Tuesday.

Rodriguez was originally supposed to fight 130-pound contender Arash Usmanee in the 10-round main event at the Emerald Queen Hotel & Casino in Tacoma, Wash. However, Usmanee suffered an ankle injury and withdrew from the fight on Sunday, leaving promoter Greg Cohen and the network scrambling for a replacement opponent.

They came up with the 27-year-old Miami, Fla.-based Dominican Republic native Vicente (25-1-2, 17 KOs), an experienced fighter, although he will be moving up two weight classes for the fight, which has been cut to an eight-rounder.

Vicente has fought primarily as a 122-pound junior featherweight. He has won two fights in row since a decision loss to fringe contender Chris Avalos in August 2012.

Mexico's Rodriguez (25-4, 23 KOs), 25, is riding a four-fight winning streak since suffering a 10-round unanimous decision loss to former featherweight titlist Billy Dib in July 2012.

The co-feature will pit junior welterweight Zahir Raheem (34-3, 21 KOs), 37, of Philadelphia, against Bayan Jargal (17-4-3, 11 KOs), 31, of Arlington, Va., in a scheduled 10-round bout.

The network also said that a six-round heavyweight undercard fight between Hollywood, Calif.-based Lateef Kayode (19-0, 15 KOs), a 30-year-old former cruiserweight contender who moved up in weight in December after 18 months out of the ring, and Jonte Willis (9-7-1, 3 KOs), 30, of Tacoma, will open the telecast.
