Mitchell to face Maduma on May 31

4/30/2014

Lightweights Kevin Mitchell and Ghislain Maduma will square off in a world title eliminator on May 31 at Wembley Stadium in London, Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn announced Tuesday.

They will meet on the undercard of the rematch between super middleweight titlist Carl Froch and George Groves, which is expected to draw a British-record crowd of some 80,000. The Mitchell-Maduma winner will become the mandatory challenger for 135-pound titleholder Miguel Vazquez of Mexico.

Mitchell (37-2, 27 KOs), 29, of England, is seeking a second shot at a world title. In September 2012, he was knocked out in the fourth round by then-lightweight titlist Ricky Burns. Mitchell has won four bouts in a row since.

Maduma (16-0, 10 KOs), 29, a native of Congo living in Montreal, will be facing his first name opponent.

"This fight carries huge risk but also huge rewards," Hearn said. "I strongly believe that Kevin can beat Vazquez but he has a massive test in Maduma first at Wembley. Maduma is technically very good and can punch with both hands, but Kevin has boxed four times in seven months and is ready to enter deep waters. It's going to be a cracking fight."

The card also includes Jamie McDonnell facing Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat for a vacant bantamweight belt, super middleweights James DeGale and Brandon Gonzalez in a final title eliminator and 2012 British Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Anthony Joshua in his sixh pro fight against an opponent to be determined.
