British junior featherweight contender Scott Quigg will meet Miami-based Cuban Yoandris Salinas for a vacant world title on Sept. 28 at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, England, promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport announced on Wednesday.
The bout will serve as the co-feature on the card headlined by the much-anticipated all-British heavyweight showdown between former titleholder David Haye (26-2, 24 KOs) and rising contender Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KOs).
"It's a dream come true that my first world title fight will be in Manchester," Quigg said. "It'll be a massive boost to have my fans there and, with Haye and Fury fighting, too, it's a huge night to be involved in and a great stage to land a world title. I've worked so hard to get here and I'm going to grab this title with both hands."
Quigg (26-0-1, 19 KOs) had held an interim belt but relinquished it when the fight with Salinas for a vacant belt came up, although it's the sanctioning organization's secondary title because Guillermo Rigondeaux is recognized as its "super champion."
Quigg, 24, claimed an interim belt via sixth-round knockout of Rendall Munroe in a rematch in November. Then he split with promoter Ricky Hatton, signed with Matchroom Sport and won a June 29 nontitle fight by third-round knockout against William Prado before landing the fight with Salinas.
"It's fantastic for Scott to be challenging for his first world title on this bill," Hearn said. "They're both young unbeaten fighters desperate to take this golden chance. It's a great fight on what promises to be a huge night for British boxing."
Salinas (20-0-1, 13 KOs) is taking a step up in competition. The most notable opponent of his career has been Nehomar Cermeno, who won an interim title last week. Salinas, 27, and Cermeno fought to an eight-round split draw in Panama in 2011.
The card also will feature middleweight contender Andy Lee (30-2, 21 KOs), 29, of Ireland against Domenico Spada (37-4, 19 KOs), 32, of Italy.
"This is a great next step for me in my career," Lee said. "Spada has been around the world scene for years now and has never before been stopped. He's a renowned tough guy with a solid chin and a great work ethic. Therefore, it is my aim to go out there, put on a show and become the first man to stop him."
