Ricky Burns has surgery on jaw
Scottish boxer Ricky Burns has had surgery after breaking his jaw in a draw with Mexican challenger Raymundo Beltran in a WBO lightweight title fight.
Burns confirmed his injury through his Twitter account Sunday.
Jaw defo broken, in agony here. Honestly dont know how I managed to get through that fight. Thanks to every1 for their support tonight— Ricky Burns (@ricksterko) September 8, 2013
Promoter Eddie Hearn added Sunday on the social networking site that, "Ricky is now in surgery to have a titanium plate in his jaw."
Burns fought with the injury for 10 rounds and was floored in the eighth round on Saturday. However, Burns managed to secure a draw -- to his surprise and that of his hometown fans in Glasgow -- and retain his title after the third judge scored the fight 114-114.
Hearn said in a tweet he was surprised Burns was able to fight with his injury.
not sure how Ricky continued for 10 rounds with an injury like that and right now my concerns are for him and making sure he is ok.— Eddie Hearn (@EddieHearn) September 8, 2013
Hearn later tweeted that Burns' surgery had been completed.
For those asking, @ricksterko is out of the operating theatre and now sitting up in bed - will update more later— Eddie Hearn (@EddieHearn) September 8, 2013
