Edmonton wins first CFL title in 10 years

Associated Press

REGINA, Saskatchewan -- Jason Tucker caught two touchdown passes, and Edmonton got even with the Montreal Alouettes with a 34-22 victory Sunday that gave the Eskimos the Grey Cup.

A crowd of 50,909 saw Edmonton win its first Canadian Football League title since 1993 and the 12th in the team's history. The Eskimos avenged a 25-16 loss to Montreal in last year's championship game in Edmonton and prevented the Alouettes from winning consecutive Cups for the first time.

Tucker caught seven passes for 132 yards and was named the game's outstanding player.

"It's wonderful," Tucker said. "We've had a goal since we lost last year that we were going to win it this year and that's what's kept us going all season."

Former Alouette Mike Pringle, who went to Edmonton last winter after a bitter feud with Montreal, scored on a 4-yard run and Ray also ran in a touchdown. Sean Fleming added two field goals for the Eskimos.

"It couldn't have been any sweeter than this," said Pringle. "This is what I envisioned going into the season. I wanted to win no matter who was on the other side of the ball. The fact that it was Montreal was just icing on the cake."

Anthony Calvillo threw TD passes to Cahoon and Sylvain Girard, while running back Deonce Whitaker passed to Pat Woodcock for a TD on an option play for Montreal.

Montreal is 3-7 in 10 Grey Cup meetings with Edmonton in one of the league's top rivalries.

The Eskimos are 12-11 in a league-record 23 Grey Cup games, while Montreal fell to 5-8.

Montreal was penalized 13 times for 122 yards, including two pass interference calls. Edmonton had 14 flags thrown against them, but their penalties only resulted in a loss of 67 yards. Montreal also fumbled three times, losing the ball once.

"You add that up and you add up that we didn't play well on offense in the second half," said Calvillo, last year's MVP who went 22-for-37 for 371 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday.
