Five things we learned Monday

On Monday, we learned that the Chicago Cubs were human, Yoenis Cespedes and Clayton Kershaw might not be, while two old dogs still have some bite.

The Cubs suddenly don't look so all-time super after the Cardinals tied it in the seventh and won Randal Grichuk's walk-off home run. The Cubs have gone 4-8 in their past 12 games, hitting .222 in that span, and have dropped from a 130-win pace to a mere 109-win pace.

John Lackey is not really a strikeout pitcher any longer, unless he's facing the Cardinals. He struck out 11 the last time he was at Busch Stadium, on April 18, one of only two double-digit strikeout games for him this season. He could top that Monday night, as he has seven strikeouts through five innings and he has only needed 59 pitches to get there.

Cubs GM Jed Hoyer indicated Shane Victorino is ML ready but the team didn't have a place for him especially with the emergence of Matt Szczur. Victorino was released on Monday.

The Cubs released Shane Victorino on Monday after several weeks at Triple-A Iowa. He never wanted to spend too much time in the minors and with Matt Szczur and others ahead of him the Cubs parted ways.
