The hits keep coming for Notre Dame's defense, which lost one more player for the season and will be down several more for Saturday's game at Pittsburgh.

Linebacker Ben Councell is out for the season with a significant left knee injury, coach Brian Kelly said Sunday.

Defensive lineman Kona Schwenke is out for Saturday's game against the Panthers with a high-ankle sprain. Sheldon Day aggravated a high-ankle sprain he had suffered earlier this season but may be ready to play against Pitt.

And those were all from just this past Saturday's 38-34 win over Navy.

Nose guard Louis Nix's status remains up in the air for this coming weekend as he was undergoing an MRI Sunday afternoon for a small meniscus tear. He had missed the last two games with what Kelly had originally described as knee tendinitis, though Kelly stressed that the tendinitis is what is worse. The Irish announced Nix will practice this week.

Left guard Chris Watt's status is contingent upon his being able to adjust and play with a PCL tear that forced him to leave the Oct. 26 win at Air Force. Watt dressed for Saturday's game against Navy but did not feel right warming up and sat out.

Safety Austin Collinsworth suffered a neck strain and has an MRI scheduled for Monday, while linebacker Ishaq Williams, who suffered a knee injury against Air Force, might return for Notre Dame's Nov. 23 game against BYU.

Safety Elijah Shumate (hamstring), who has not played in three straight games, is expected to play this Saturday.
