ESPNChicago.com is reporting that Cubs left-hander Neal Cotts had elbow ligament surgery on Thursday night. Cincinnati-based surgeon Timothy Kremchek performed the surgery.
"I just got out of surgery and everything went well," Cotts told me via text message.
Elbow ligament replacement surgery -- commonly known as Tommy John surgery -- is completely successful for a high percentage of players who have had the operation in the past. Recovery time is usually 11 months to a year before the pitcher can return at full strength on the mound.
Cotts, a member of the 2005 World Series champion White Sox and with the Cubs since 2007, struggled with his control before being optioned to Triple-A Iowa on May 27.
